10 Ways to Make Any Room Feel Larger Without Knocking Down Walls

One of the most common briefs we receive is: "The room feels small — can you make it feel bigger?" The great news is that square footage is just one factor. With the right design techniques, even compact spaces can feel generous, light-filled, and completely comfortable.

1. Embrace a Light, Neutral Palette

Pale walls, ceilings, and floors create a seamless, airy feel. The trick is to keep the contrast between surfaces low — a room where walls, ceiling, and trim are all similar tones feels significantly larger than one with dark accent walls.

2. Use Mirrors Strategically

A well-placed full-height mirror can effectively double the perceived depth of a room. Position mirrors opposite windows to bounce natural light deep into the space.

3. Raise Curtains to Ceiling Height

Hanging curtains from ceiling level — even if your window is mid-wall — draws the eye upward and creates the illusion of taller ceilings. Use floor-to-ceiling drapes in a neutral tone for maximum impact.

4. Choose Furniture with Exposed Legs

Sofas and chairs that rest on visible legs allow light to pass beneath them, keeping the floor plane visible and making the room feel less cluttered.

5. Built-in Storage Eliminates Visual Clutter

Custom built-ins — from floor-to-ceiling wardrobes to alcove shelving — create storage without the visual weight of freestanding furniture. The result is a cleaner, more spacious feel.

6. Keep the Flooring Continuous

Using the same flooring material throughout — rather than breaking it into sections — removes visual interruptions and makes the overall floor plate feel larger.

7. Opt for Multi-Functional Furniture

Storage ottomans, sofa beds, and extendable dining tables give you flexibility without overcrowding the space on a day-to-day basis.

8. Reduce the Number of Furniture Pieces

More furniture doesn't mean more comfort. A carefully edited selection of quality pieces, properly scaled to the room, will always feel better than a crowded arrangement.

9. Use Vertical Lines

Vertical elements — tall bookshelves, vertical tile patterns, or vertical panelling — draw the eye upward and make ceilings feel higher.

10. Maximise Natural Light

Keep window treatments light and minimal. If privacy is needed, use sheer fabrics rather than blackout curtains. The more natural light enters a room, the larger it feels.
